Dr. Bethenia Owens-Adair

1840-1926

Dr. Bethenia worked her way from illiterate laundress and domestic, to schoolteacher, to an entreprenuer who opened a hat shop (milliner's shop) at this spot on Jackson Street.

She would spy on her rival, Ann Compton, to try to learn how to make hats with the latest techniques.

1872, she decided she wanted to be a doctor.

She fought for over 50 years for women's equality in medicine.
